Tis the season for good cheer, good friends, and giving back! Last week, gardein got into the spirit of the season and paid a visit to one of our favorite nonprofit organizations, the Farm Sanctuary, an organization dedicated to improving the lives of farm animals. The organization recently made the news when Jon Stewart and his wife announced their new farm would be the newest Farm Sanctuary branch.
We were treated to a tour of the Southern California farm in Acton, and spent many hours getting acquainted with some new furry and feathered friends, from Paolo the cow, to Yoda, the ever-alert llama who helps protect against coyotes, and the goats Claire and Erika, a mother-daughter pair. Claire was rescued from a factory farm, and found to be pregnant. Erika was born on the sanctuary and lucky enough to know nothing besides good care and loving attention – which was maybe why she was so eager to be pet, she had no problem pushing other goats out of the way for attention!
Each animal had a unique story of how they came to live at the Farm Sanctuary, and how they had adapted to their new lives on the farm, such as the goat who believed he was a sheep, or the old pig who was nursed back to health by a younger pig’s attention, or the young teenage cows who always want to play and rough-house with their much smaller, less furry, two-legged friends. The visit was a heartwarming opportunity, and a must-do for any animal-lover!
Farm Sanctuary is committed to increasing awareness and understanding of farm animals through animal rescue, public education, and advocacy.
